Program Title: Exploring the Bias in Coaching
Description: Exploring Our Bias in Coaching
As a coach, our role is to serve as a vessel and thought partner in the creative exchange and path of our clients’ achievement. As with any partnership, our beliefs, values, and cycle of socialization play a role in our interactions, regardless of intent. In this session, we will explore our implicit associations and bias’s roles in coaching. We will examine our own journeys and triggers that require deliberate management and cleansing as we interact with clients. As it relates to the ICF Core Competencies, here are our expected outcomes during our discussion:
Setting the Foundation
We will explore our own behaviors, as relates to our bias and the ICF Code of Ethics
Discuss how we manage relaying bias in the coaching agreement, based on assumptions and projections
Co-Creating the Relationship
Recognize the role of bias in establishing trust and intimacy with the client
Seek full self-awareness in how we access intuition versus stereotype
Communicate Effectively
Let go of our judgments of client’s perspectives and stories while actively listening
Gain tools to communicate directly without fear of a perceived client bias
Facilitating Learning and Results
Discuss the difference between creating client awareness from a global perspective versus our perspective
Explore how our bias can impact facilitating a results-driven client engagement
Prior to our time together, please chose one or more assessments from Harvard’s Project Implicit, as a tool for building your own awareness of implicit associations. This validated tool helps us discover where we may have implicit associations that play a role in our coaching abilities.
